Albert Road Apartments

This development proposes a contemporary extension to an existing art-deco apartment building located in South Melbourne. An additional three one-bedroom units are proposed, along with a communal roof terrace and bike parking facilities, to replace a section of the site currently used for car parking and storage.

In response to the location of the site, the program looks to harness the ample abundance of public transport in the area, as well as bike options. This enabled MUSK to explore an outcome with no car parking, that encourages sustainable living and transport options.

The proposed design explores creating a contemporary interpretation of the design expression apparent in the existing building, utilizing modern forms and materials to be visually distinct from the existing elements. The creation of large ‘cut-outs’ capture expansive North facing views of the city and instigate immediate changes to softer materials, glazing and internal connections. Translucent screening is used to enclose the new stairwell and form balustrades to create a lighter and more permeable break in the façade.

The streetscape presence has been highly considered, with an aim to create a natural flow of heights and horizontality. The existing concrete crossover has been removed, returning this space to a usable public area with bench seating, planting and ample bike parking.
